Jacob’s Ladder

This ink and watercolor on paper painting is by the English Romanticartist, William Blake, from circa 1799-1806, and is titled “Jacob’s Ladder”, or “Jacob’s Dream”. The subject for this piece comes from the Book of Genesis, Chapter 28, verses 10-19 in the Bible.
In these verses, Jacob dreams of a ladder to heaven while on the run from his brother, Esau. Verse 12 reads “He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it”.
