Dear Parish Family,

Here at Our Lady of Grace, we have put a considerable amount of prayer, thought and effort into a plan for the upcoming year of Religious Education.  While these times are difficult and require all of us to change, we have chosen to look at these extraordinary times as an opportunity to enhance our religion program. We are excited to be offering a program that we believe will be a blessing to our parish families.

Due to the concern of spreading the virus and with a desire to avoid adding to children’s time online, the program of religious education will be following a modified schedule and method. This year we are moving to family catechesis, which means parents and or a trusted relative will be the primary teacher of the weekly lessons.  In this model, the parish provides resources and support to you, as together we share the riches of our faith with your children.

Instruction will primarily take place at home, encouraging parents to journey with their children as they grow in faith. Each student will receive a textbook which will be accompanied by detailed instructions on how to get the most out of the textbook’s accompanying website. At the end of each chapter, the students will submit online Session Reviews for each lesson. In addition, parents will be guided by bi-monthly virtual support directed by Fr. Marc Swartvagher, providing material that will enrich the at-home learning experience. One meeting a month will involve relevant catechesis, while the second meeting, which should be attended by both parent and child, will emphasize prayer or another spiritual activity. These virtual meetings are a mandatory part of the program and will be available to view at a later time if for any reason you are unable to attend the live virtual meeting.

Our Lady Of Grace Religious Education Mission Statement

The Mission of Jesus was –

to make known to us the love of the Father and show us the way to Him.
Knowing our weakness, Jesus sent the Spirit to strengthen His followers to live as God’s people.
This mission Jesus shared with His Apostles and Church. This mission has been passed on to us in Howard Beach.

At Our Lady of Grace, we continue – to proclaim God’s love to journey together as His followers to depend on the Spirit and to build up the Kingdom of God here and now, in our midst.

At Our Lady of Grace, we believe – that religious education is a life-long process; that the goal of religious education is to know God and to respond to God in one’s life; that the role of the catechist is to facilitate this process by sharing faith and by good example;  that each child entrusted to us is uniquely loved by the Lord and is called to a loving relationship with Him.

That together – with the religious education staff, the parents/guardians, the children are called to build a Christian Community in the City of God.
